Flacco gets nod as Ravens starting quarterback

By DAVID GINSBURG, AP Sports Writer 3 hours, 42 minutes ago

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP)—Rookie quarterback Joe Flacco will start in the season opener Sunday for the Baltimore Ravens, who awarded the job to their top draft pick because he’s the healthiest player at the position.

Flacco, the 18th pick overall, will launch his NFL career against the Cincinnati Bengals. There is a chance the two other quarterbacks competing for the job, Troy Smith and Kyle Boller, both will not be available as backups.

“It wouldn’t be realistic to have one of those two guys as a starter, for sure. If they can back up, I think that would be an upset,” coach John Harbaugh said Monday.

When I was at the Baltimore game I thought Troy Smith looked pretty good. Probably not smart to throw the rook in there when Troy would most likely do a good job.

Wasn't Troy Smith like 3 for 5 for 18 yards against the Vikings?
Whoops, just checked, 3 for 5 for 25 yards and 1 INT... Troy looked good with his legs on 2 scrambles, other than that he didn't really have a chance to impress.
The true measure of a man is what he'd do knowing he'd never be found out.

Problem is Troy is out due to an illness.

Smith is still feeling the effects of infected tonsils and Boller has a sore shoulder that could ultimately require surgery. In an effort to add depth, the Ravens worked out quarterbacks Chris Simms, Joey Harrington and Todd Bouman on Monday.
I think Joe is out there as a last resort.
Thier QB squad is like the walking wounded.

I have no idea if this is the right call, but which one of the QBs is the right call? None of them are any good and all have positives and negatives to them. He just needs to manage the offense.
