GREEN BAY, Wis. -- With the NFL putting increased emphasis on monitoring players' head injuries this season, Brett Favre said he was surprised that Detroit Lions quarterback Jon Kitna was allowed to return to the game after getting a concussion on Sunday.....

Re: Favre surprised that Kitna was allowed to return
I think it was on Real Sports or NFLN TA about 2 weeks ago, they made comments on how the team doctor is now suppose to be the ultimate decider of if the player gets back on field.
It was almost like they are trying to take the blame off the NFL and the coaches and put the blame on the doctors.
The question was asked, can these doctors be unbiased and out of the control of the team, after all, they are employees of the team.
I think there may be too much peer pressure for them to go back in the game.
They should be removed from the sideline.

With the leagues new policy on concusions, no way should Kitna have been allowed back in the game.
The league should have imposed a fine on the Lions.

I understand how it seems like with the new policy that he shouldn't have been let back into the game but all the NFL has done is shift the responsibility.
The same guy (Dr) is still in control, they are just changed the wording. The DR and the Player are going to get screwed.
I could be wrong, but I still think that the policy put the responsibility to the Doctors, the Doc had to have given him and the coaching staff the OK or Kitna wouldn't have been back in the game.
It was/is the Doctor's job to judge the severity of the injury.
Plus the guy was telling the Doc that a miracle had happened.
How can one discount that?

Read this and see if you think that the policy has changed that much.
http://www.sportslegacy.org/documents/NYTNFLConcussionPolicy082107.pdf
From what I can tell, the NFL couldn't fine the team or do anything to the team.
Also seems that the only thing in the NFL's policy that has changed is that a player that gets knocked out can't reenter the game and the new hotline for those that feel they were coerced into returning when they didn't want to go back into the game.
I think that they put this policy in and the NFL labeled it "player friendly," so we all think it is when it is still too close to the old policy.
The knock out policy is good though.
The UFC has a 45 day policy for its fighters that get knocked out.... The NFL players might be back out there getting hit on Tues or Wednesday in practice.
Football is a violent sport!

With the severity it first appeared to be at by Kitna's explanation, he shouldn't have been let back in without an X-ray or a catscan.
20 years from now when he's looking for money from the NFLPA because he suffered a concuscion & is suffering from side affects from it, I'd be hard pressed to give it to him because he went back in & played.
