Re: Favre To Return in 06'?

Looks like these talks are a bit premature

    Packers: Favre claim laughed off
    JASON WILDE

GREEN BAY - Ted Thompson paused, then chuckled.

The Green Bay Packers' general manager knew all about the hot rumor that had been burning up talk radio and message boards Wednesday, when the Web site profootballtalk.com claimed that quarterback Brett Favre has informed the club of his intention to return next season.

"I don't comment on Internet reports," Thompson said Wednesday night. Pause, chuckle. "Especially Internet reports."

Nonetheless, the report had fans buzzing and mainstream news outlets checking into it, even though most assume Favre eventually will announce that he's coming back.

That said, two club sources said Wednesday evening that if Favre has told the team he'll be back, it's news to them. And earlier this week, coach Mike McCarthy and former No. 3 quarterback Craig Nall, Favre's best friend on the team before signing with Buffalo, each said that Favre had not made a decision as far as they knew.

As for the report, it began with a posting that read: "Although there's been no official announcement, we've been told that Packers quarterback Brett Favre has informed the team that he'll be returning for the 2006 season."

The report closed sarcastically: "His return for 2006 means that, barring an unequivocal statement before, during, or after the coming season, we'll get to spend another 12 months or so periodically addressing the same, old, tired issue."

Also, keep in mind that this is the same Web site that superimposed the heads of O.J. Simpson and ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli on a suit and joked that they were candidates to replace retiring NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue, so consider the source.

The reality is that the team expects Favre to return for a 16th NFL season, in part because he has taken so long to announce his plans. The feeling is that the longer it takes Favre to decide, the more likely it is that he is coming back.

    Kicked aside

As for real football news, Thompson didn't sound overly disappointed that free agent kicker Adam Vinatieri chose the Indianapolis Colts over the Packers on Tuesday.

"It's free agency. When people become free agents, they get to decide where they want to play," Thompson said. "Kicking in a dome has to be a factor. That's just the way it goes."

The Packers have an interest in former Colts kicker Mike Vanderjagt, although no visit has been set, an NFL source said. Thompson intimated that the position is not a priority.

"We'll need a kicker sometime around the second week in September, when we open the season," said Thompson, whose team lost franchise leading scorer Ryan Longwell to the Minnesota Vikings earlier this month. "Until then, we don't absolutely have to have a kicker. But we're working on it."

Little do they know that Vanderjagt has just signed with Dallas

    Favre

Who is this moron? Please bring a kicker in the second week of September, that will work out great for your working relationship with the long snapper and holder!

What has happened to the vaunted GB organization, it sounds like nobody there has a clue to what is going on!

More and more it looks like they are trying to force him to retire by making the team worse than last year (if that is possible)! They owe it to their fans to have the balls to tell Favre they are going a different way, it would be the most honest way, and you do not destroy your team to get rid of one guy that doesn't know when to quit!

I understand you Green Bay fans don't want him to go out with the terrible year he had last year! But this year is going to be worse, and as bad as you line is going to be he could get crippled for the rest of his life!

You are getting ready to play a game of backyard football, and you have the first pick. In front of you stands Brett Favre and Brad Johnson, who do you pick???

Now look at it like this, Brad is already on your team, do you still pick Favre?

No, BJ is our QB, he is already on the team. It just wouldn't be worth the money to invest in two QBs plus you would have to trade for Favre, right. It isn't just a simple matter of picking him up, isn't he under contract. Oh well, it was a fun hypothetical question.

On our local news in the Twin Cities. A story was leaked that Favre has informed the Packers that he will return for 2006, and Green Bay is not happy that the story was leaked but confirmed it is true.

So Green Bay fans you have Favre for another year and we are all happy here in Purple Land because we get to pick him off 5 or 6 more times next year!

He's crazy to come back, but I welcome him. I just wish Detroit would keep Joey. Not too happy about Kitna on the Bears, however. Why couldn't they sign Garcia?

I hate the pack as much as the next viking fan but you gotta respect favre, the guy is a hall of famer and a guy who stuck with his team until the end it hard to come by that no days. So with that I hope he retires because he scares the piss out of me every time he touches the ball.
