Favre feels up to throwing more interceptions

Rodgers gets more work in practice than he usually does

    By Pete Dougherty

Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre did limited work in team drills on Friday but will make his 226th consecutive regular-season start on Sunday against the St. Louis Rams at Lambeau Field.

Favre injured his head and a nerve in his neck and shoulder late in the Packers' loss at Philadelphia on Monday. He sat out Wednesday's practice except for light throwing in the team's walk-through drills, then took part in some team work on Thursday and Friday.

"(Favre) took his share of reps," coach Mike McCarthy said Friday. "We worked (backup) Aaron (Rodgers) a little more. Brett took the things more situation-specific that he needed to hit as we went through red zone, third down, things like that. But Aaron Rodgers got some work."

McCarthy listed Favre on the official injury report as probable, meaning he almost certainly will play as usual.

Favre had soreness in his neck on Wednesday that prevented him from turning his head as far as normal. He still had some pain there on Friday.

"You're dealing with nerves. You never know how long it's going to last," McCarthy said.

About those wrist bands: Since Week 2, the Packers' defensive players have been wearing wrist bands that list play calls for 2-minute and no-huddle situations.

The wrist bands have an opening and plastic cover for a sheet that has color- and number-coded plays. The defensive coaching staff can give quick signals without having the defense huddle.

Defensive coordinator Bob Sanders decided to use the wrist bands in part because the Cincinnati Bengals unexpectedly ran a no-huddle offense for part of their preseason game against the Packers on Aug. 28.

The coded sheets allow Sanders to use hand and number signals to refer to defensive calls, and even to change part of a call if he thinks he's made a bad call.

"It doesn't have anything to do with that stuff (like defensive audibles)," linebacker Nick Barnett said.

A nickel for your thoughts: McCarthy wouldn't name a nickel defensive back for Sunday's game, though Patrick Dendy's two years of experience in the Packers' defensive system makes him the likely candidate over rookie Jarrett Bush.

The Packers are replacing Ahmad Carroll, who was cut Tuesday after working as the nickel back throughout the offseason and in the first four games.

No matter who mans the nickel spot, the job will be difficult because the Rams have one of the best starting receiver duos in Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce, plus a fast No. 3 receiver in Kevin Curtis.

Rams coach Scott Linehan likely will do everything he can to try to match up either Holt or Bruce on Dendy. Sanders will be as intent on making sure starting cornerbacks Al Harris and Charles Woodson are matched on Holt and Bruce.

Along the line: Now that Jason Spitz is healthy, he and fellow rookie Daryn Colledge will be the starting guards.

Rookie Tony Moll replaced Colledge in the starting lineup early in training camp, but Colledge played well enough after Spitz missed two games to stay at left guard. Spitz will move back to right guard.

Moll may play some in a rotation, McCarthy said.

It will serve him right if he does.. He is only playing for the money, and the glory.. Lets face it, his greatest achievement right now is his consecutive games started.. He is washed up, and for sure shouldn't be a first ballot hall of famer like everyone is saying.. If he breaks the INT record (which he will) he shouldn't be a shoein for the HOF...
