Re: Falcons, Ryan reach terms on six-year, $72 million contract

I was listening to Kirwan on Sirius on the way home tonight.

He was comparing this contract with Vince Youngs contract.
Taken at the same slot 24 months earlier.
He also talked indepth about what this means for the number 2 pick (Long).

    Gonna get ugly this year.
Alot of GM's pissed over this signing and what it does to the slots.
Many many thanks to my talented friend Jos for the new Sig.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/josdin00/Vikings/Marrdro_sig.jpg

they said on NFL live that this is really gonna hurt the other guys drafted in the top 5. Since they cannot give deals longer than 5 years, players are going to be angered over not getting as much guarenteed to them as matt ryan and Jake Long, it shall be interesting

Kirwan talked about that to DC but I couldn't quite follow what he meant.
    Now I think I understand.
Very interesting dynamic going on here.

What the hell were the Falcons thinking?

they wanted the fanbase of them and the nfl to know they are done with mike vick, and paying Ryan that much over 6 years shows they are done with Vick. I understand why they did it, but its still a ridiculous amount of money for a rookie QB.

You might be right, but to throw the whole signing process out of whack is crazy.

What incentive does this give a player to work hard to get that big contract? If the player does not love the game, which most should, I could see some players slacking off. What good is the NFL if all you have to do is be good in college?

Wage wars? Rookie contracts not as big a problem as some believe

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/jim_trotter/05/28/rookie.wage/index.html?eref=si_topstories

Each time a high draft choice signs a megadeal in the NFL, critics make the case for a wage scale that would limit the money that first-round draft choices receive.
