    From Register news services

Tim Smith, 42, who set a Super Bowl rushing record with the Washington Redskins in 1988, was sentenced Friday in Denver to 21/2 years in federal prison for cocaine distribution.

The former running back also was ordered to pay $88,000 in back child support and must report to prison by July 10. His brother, Christopher Smith, 35, was sentenced May 12 to five years of probation.

The two were indicted by a federal grand jury in October. Tim Smith pleaded guilty to cocaine distribution, and Christopher Smith pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting cocaine distribution. They were arrested Sept. 30 and charged with possession of 500 grams or more of cocaine with intent to distribute. Police said Tim Smith sold about 20 ounces of the drug to an undercover officer for $13,600.

Smith rushed for 204 yards and two touchdowns in the Redskins' 42-10 victory over the Denver Broncos in the title game. He last played in the NFL in 1990 with Dallas.

NFL: Two boat-party Vikings plead guilty

Minnesota Vikings cornerback Fred Smoot and left tackle Bryant McKinnie pleaded guilty in Minneapolis to misdemeanor charges stemming from the team's raucous boat party last October.

Each agreed to pay a $1,000 fine and perform 48 hours of community service. Smoot and McKinnie pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and being a public nuisance on a watercraft. The second charge will be removed from their records if they stay out of trouble for a year.

Chicago Bears cornerback Ricky Manning Jr. (UCLA) pleaded not guilty in Los Angeles to an assault charge stemming from an alleged attack on a man in a restaurant last month.

Manning, 25, waived his right to be in court June 16, when a date is to be set for a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to require him to stand trial on a charge of assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury. Two other former UCLA players, Maurice Drew and Tyler Ebell, are scheduled to appear on the same charge, also on June 16.

Cleveland Browns running back Reuben Droughns threw his wife out the door of their Littleton, Colo., home after she said she wanted a divorce, according to a sheriff's report. Droughns (Anaheim High) was released on $2,500 bail Thursday on one count of assault and two counts of harassment.

The arrest report said Kellie Droughns' right arm was hurt in the May 12 incident.

Starting cornerback Will Peterson, a five-year veteran, was cut by the New York Giants after his 2005 season was ruined by knee and back injuries.

The Giants also signed nine-year veteran quarterback Rob Johnson (El Toro High, USC), who will try to win a job as Eli Manning's backup.

Johnson, who didn't play in 2004 or 2005 while recovering from arm surgery, joins Tim Hasselbeck, Jared Lorenzen and Josh Harris on the roster behind Manning.
