I'm with you on this one, Bloody. As soon as I saw this thread I thought of New England's signing of Junior Seau last year. A lot of people thought it was a meaningless pickup, and I have to agree that he didn't do anything spectacular, but he did start 10 games, had 30 tackles (14 solo), and one sack. Not great, but he was nonetheless a starter on a defense that destroyed us last year and went deep into the playoffs.Wait a week or two... if nobody signs him offer him a bag of peanuts and a tic tac to see if he'll come warm a bench for us.
If E.J. chokes at MLB, or we sustain an injury, we'll have solid depth.
Meanwhile, Trotter started all 16 games last year, had and had 87 tackles (69 solo) and an interception. Obviously he still could have something of a career left. And for the record, I don't think he's as good as EJ at this point, but I would have no qualms with EJ proving it in a position battle. I do think Trotter is better than any of our backups though.
Trotter:
2005 Philadelphia 15
102 19 121
1.0 9
1 2 0
0 2 10 0
2006 Philadelphia 16
88 25 113
0.0 0
1 17 0
0 1 4 0
Henderson:
2005 Minnesota 15
55 22 77
1.0 7
0 0 0
0 1 1 0
2006 Minnesota 16
77 33 110
3.0 30
2 48 1
1 1 4 0
Trotter is a 4-time pro-bowler... Henderson has been to... none.
Keep in mind also, those massive 77 solo tackles by Henderson are the most he's had in any season of his career.
Also, in Trotters second season in Washington, he had:
2003 Washington 16
92 23 115
1.5 5
1 21 0
0 2 11 0
92 solo tackles and I doubt they were running the exact same defense as Philly.

I see inconsistency from one year to the next.
No doubt, he has had several good seasons...but if we were to consider him, he would have to accept the fact that EJ is the starter...and that he would have to sign for backup money.
After all, he's no Donnie Edwards!
:P
Every year many Viking fans say this is EJ's year, blah blah blah... he hasn't shown yet that he deserves to be our starting MLB and I don't think this year will be any different.
Hell, if he gets over 100 solo tackles this season, I'll record myself pouring gasoline on my crotch and light it on fire, then post it on PP.O.
:
Besides, what we need MOST is a MLB that can play PASS defense...Trotter is much more of a run stuffer...something that we don't really need as much with the Williams Brothers setting up shop down low.
IF EJ takes that next step (which was his weakness two years ago), EJ will definitely be a better alternative than Trotter.
That being said, if Trotter wants to sign a contract with the Vikes for backup money, he can take the spot that Rufus Alexander would have had if he hadn't blown out his knee.
That way, we don't suffer any dropoff from Rufus's injury this season.BANNED OR DEAD...I'LL TAKE EITHER ONE

Re: Eagles continue shakeup on defense by releasing Trotter
I don't think you guys really want Trotter.
He may well get picked up by someone desperate for LB depth, but he's done.
As an Eagles fan, I hate to see him go, but his production seriously declined last year and didn't show much improvement through pre-season.
Much of our pathetic run D last year came down to Trot.
Go back and watch the Divisional playoff game, Eagles-Saints.
The Saints went right at Trotter all game with great success.
Trott's knees are in terrible shape and he simply can't move quick enough to be a force against the running game any more and he was never a great cover LB.
When Trot was on form, he was devastating against the run - clear pro-bowler, but he's just not there any more.
He's still better than a couple of the Eagles 3rd string backups, but why cut /take away reps from a young guy with upside potential to keep someone whose days are more or less over?

He still has the potential to make an impact and to bring in Trotter would take away from his reps.BANNED OR DEAD...I'LL TAKE EITHER ONE

Re: Eagles continue shakeup on defense by releasing Trotter
Somehow I can't see him wanting to come to Minny on the chance that he might get playing time. If EJ does cope with the MLB position then Trotter will only be warming the bench - which I can't see suiting him.
Time spent annoying a Packer fan is never time wasted...

Re: Eagles continue shakeup on defense by releasing Trotter
Im sure Chillie will give him a look just because he is a former Eagle and he probably has some kind of connection with him. I dont think there is a need to sign him because our LB's are set. I guess we could sign him as a backup but not for to much money.

We would be better off saving our money and signing Holcomb once they release him.

Are they gonna release Holcomb??I thought they were gonna trade him. Im sure the ATL will be a more intriging place for Holcomb because he would have a chance to start
