Diggs out for weeks

I never like to hear that anyone got injured. Yes, even if it's a packer. Looks like he might miss the season opener.

Whenever I hear the name "Na'il Diggs," an image of someone scraping somebody with their fingernails enters my mind immediately.

Kinda weird, but, um...I'm just asking if this happens to anyone else.

Green Bay - The teammates who are counting on linebacker Na'il Diggs to lead a resurgence of the Green Bay Packers' defense this season got a lot better news Monday night than some might have anticipated.

Diggs isn't going to need reconstructive surgery on his left knee and he isn't going to miss the entire season.

Diggs won't know for sure how long he will be out until additional diagnostic tests are performed today. Coach Mike Sherman indicated that the injury was a sprained knee, which could sideline Diggs for as few as a couple of weeks or as many as six.

The Packers open the regular season in less than five weeks, on Sept. 11 against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.

Diggs didn't get up for almost 5 minutes Monday morning after another player rolled up into him on a carry by Ahman Green during the third play of an 11-on-11 restricted contact drill.

"It was a pile and he was on the bottom of the pile," Sherman said. "It was a lot worse initially. He had some numbness, but then he got some feeling back."

As teammates kept coming over with gestures of concern and support, Diggs walked under his own power to a motorized cart and was driven off the field.

Without Diggs, the Packers will take an unsettled corps of linebackers into the exhibition opener Thursday against San Diego and beyond.

Diggs, 27, was preparing for his sixth straight season as a starter but the Packers weren't sure if it would be on the strong or weak side. That depended on whether Raynoch Thompson or Hannibal Navies proved to be the team's third-best linebacker.

For now and the foreseeable future, the Packers will start Navies on the strong side, Thompson on the weak side and Nick Barnett in the middle.
