Cowboys tag Hamlin

COWBOYS TAG HAMLIN
Posted by Mike Florio on February 21, 2008, 2:06 p.m.

The move might have been prompted in part by the decision of the Vikings to cut safety Dwight Smith, since the Vikings might have pursued Hamlin aggressively in free agency.

Thanks to PPE for the sig.

The quality in the FA market continues to decline.
The 2nd tier guys that will be left will then demand salaries that teams in dire need will be forced to pay.

Talk about a crap shoot.

True, but to be honest, this is still a better FA than last year.

With the record increases in cap room, this was going to happen.. a very depleted pool of players with agents still wanting to break the bank. This will be one of the slowest FA periods to get rolling, IMO, the quality of players are very thin and what will remain after the first couple of headliners are signed, will be nitch players or younger players with questions marks.

If the Owners are smart, they will hold back and let the prices come down that agents will open with, especially ya know, with the owner crying about the CBA and lack of profits.. it is simple don't over pay for marginal players.

I bet it won't be that slow.

The cream of the crop will get snatched up quick and it will be a bidding war for them.

As NP said above, there are still gonna be some good ones out there at almost every position of need (for the Vikes anyway).

After Z found that extra windfall in CAP, it might appear that we will be a big player again, at least in the WR, DE and S positions.

If Vikings wanted Hamlin they made a big mistake releasing Smith

I just read an article on www.nfl.com that made a lot of sense.
It said that the Cowboys tagged Hamlin last minute due to the fact that they sensed the Vikings would aggressively go after him in free agency after they released Dwight Smith.
Do you think the Vikings fumbled the ball on this one.
Should they have waited until after the tag deadline to release Smith?

I don't believe the decision to cut Smith had anything to do with Ken Hamlin. The chances of him ever hitting the open market were slim to begin with. The Cowboys need a lot of help in the secondary, why would they risk letting their best defensive back get away?

Even if the vikes were goin pursue him, why would the cowboys base the tag on that? he was gonna be FA anyway, so why would they care if we were the ones to pick him up? i guess they could've been planning to resign him during FA, but the tag is if they couldn't make out a deal b4 FA...so why would it matter if we were going to pursue him or not?
