Colts | New rule will affect team’s silent cadence
Tue, 23 May 2006 18:19:28 -0700
John Oehser, of Colts.com, reports a new NFL rule which requires offensive players, except one player in motion, to remain stationary for one full count before the snap will affect the team a little bit, according to head coach Tony Dungy. C Jeff Saturday is active at the line of scrimmage making line calls during the team's no-huddle offense. Dungy said, "It's going to affect our silent cadence a little bit, so we're going to get that squared away. We're going to have to be a little different than we were in the past. We'll make those adjustments hopefully before the first preseason game."

Anyone have an idea why this rule was brought in ?? not sure that there have been any problems that warranted this - or have I missed something ?

Re: Colts | New rule will affect team’s silent cadence
I think this has something to do with all the false-start penalties in the NFL last year. I remember there was an idea to allow WR's to be able to flinch before the snap to reduce false-start penalties, but this is a complete 180!

I never saw this coming.. I know there were alot of False Start penalties last season, but I didn't know they were thinking of changing some rules. Just something else to get teams to change their ways.

Re: Colts | New rule will affect team’s silent cadence
I think this has to do with the fact that, on a silent count, the center will swing his head back and forth as if he's calling out line adjustments, and the line knows that you go on a certain swing of his head. The center was never really getting set before the snap.

Won't this affect all the teams? You see the center directing traffic alot before the ball snaps.

Thats something I thought, hows the center to make his line calls without sometimes pointing. It will especially affect the Colts because the do not call plays before the line up. They look like a bunch of mimes wanting to hike the ball.

They just have to hold position for 1 second before the snap, it should not be that hard on the centers. What we've got here is failure to communicate.
