Ordinarily, players slapped with the franchise tag are off limits. But Tampa Bay is challenging it. The Buccaneers are scheduled to bring Saints free-agent defensive end Charles Grant, whom New Orleans franchised last month, to their training complex Friday for a visit.

Grant's agent, Bill Johnson, confirmed the visit, saying, "They're crazy about Charles."

Should the Buccaneers opt to sign Grant to an offer sheet that New Orleans declined to match, Tampa Bay would have to surrender two first-round picks to the Saints. Of course, the two teams also could always agree to a sign-and-trade deal, although the two teams play in the same division and New Orleans might be leery about facing the 28-year-old Grant twice a season. Nevertheless, the Buccaneers have arranged for Grant to visit Tampa Bay on Friday so that the key members of their organization will be there to meet with him.

Franchise tag players are not off limits you have to give up 2 1st round picks if you sign one away, but that doesn't meant you can't do it.

But the Bucks might make a trade for him, but it doesn't mean they will give up the 4th pick for him it could be a second and then a third next year or what ever deal they strike.

NO WAY that the Saints are gonna take LESS than what they could get by rule...they don't have any problem with Grant and could easily keep him around.

The teams can work out a trade and rescind the franchise tag and complete the deal the same if you have the transition tag on somebody like Matt Schaub has a transition tag that carries a 1st and 3rd round pick for compensation, if somebody made an offer to the Falcon's for a 1st and a 7th round pick and they accepted they can still make the trade.

No way are the Buc's going to give up 2 1st round picks for Charles Grant, I doubt they wouldn't even give up their 1st rounder this year for him.

last year grant had 6 sacks the year before he had 2 1/2 not the type of numbers somebody gives up 2 1st round picks for and so I doubt that the Saints get a chance at Calvin Johnson unless they give up more to the Buc's than just Grant.
And if the Buc's are stupid enough to trade Grant for CJ then they need to get rid of Gruden and make somebody else in charge of their personal decisions!
