Brian Williams - and why did we let him go, again ?

Watching the Jags- Steelers game Sunday night, it occurred to me how good cornerback Brian Williams is. He is a very good single-cover guy. Someone on this site a couple years back (!) mentioned that when he was a Viking corner, our secondary was much better. I am just wondering why we let this guy "skate".

He actually plays Safety in Jacksonville... but they rotate him at corner sometimes.

They are "Utilizing Their Talent..." something that some coaches have a tough time doing.
    Disclaimer: I'm an idiot.

Off the top of my head wasn't he the number 3 corner behind Winny and Smoot?
I thought it was a combo of the Vikings not wanting to pay their third guy that much and Williams not wanting to be the third guy.
    Correct me if I'm wrong.

Pretty much dead on. He was not happy being the third guy and the Vikes did not want to fork over the dough. Really a shame with how well he would fit in now.
He is similar to Griffin though. He is a hard-hitter, but not great on coverage at times.

Smoot should have been that "third guy".

Yeah, he was behind Winfield and Smoot. I believe we gave him our transition player tag and for some reason took it off and he went to the Jags. It was a strange chain of events. He always did well when filling in at the 2nd CB..
