Favre plans to retire -- again

quarterback Brett Favre has instructed agent Bus Cook to inform the New York Jets today that he plans to retire.

Maybe this is just his plan to force the Jets to release him by Feb. 27th.

While Favre did not directly broach the subject of the team simply releasing him so that he might have the option of signing with another team such as the Minnesota Vikings, a source said that Cook informally discussed the option with the Jets. The Jets respectfully declined that option, the source said. Favre's retirement will save the Jets his $13 million salary in salary cap space. The Jets are in one of the worst salary-cap situtations in the NFL.

The Jets can now put him on the reserve/retired list which takes hime off the books for the cap.
But maybe he really is calling it quits and realizes that fighting the Jets on a release isnt worth it this year.

Time for another 50,000 tributes to his great career, a few more tears, then as the season gets closer to starting he announces he's coming out of retirement for the umpteenth time.
He's like a punch drunk boxer that doesn't know how to live outside the ring.

Wouldn't be so irritating if the media didn't focus so much on it, but you know it will be a major topic for the next 3 months.
Had a hard time getting any other updates on sportscenter this morning, had to listen to all the drivel about his illustrious career and heroic life story yet again.

So what happens if he does not allow them to put him on the list or does him saying he is retiring automatically do that?

Favre hinted to Werder during a telephone interview that he would probably retire because he lacked the motivation necessary to continue playing and felt prepared for life after football.
