Chargers | Esiason says Schottenheimer should have been fired
Thu, 5 Jan 2006 13:06:28 -0800
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports former NFL QB Boomer Esiason felt San Diego Chargers head coach Marty Schottenheimer should have been fired following the 2005 season. "I think that team was too good not to make it to the playoffs," said Esiason, who is an analyst for CBS Sports. "Who should be held accountable there? I love Marty, but you know what, bottom line is that team underperformed this year. ... I think somebody needs to be held accountable."

I think Boomer needs to be held accountable for his lousy personality and atrocious commentary ability.

Re: Boomer wants Marty fired.
A QB who didn't accomplish anything special in his playing career is the last person to make an assumption like that.

Re: Boomer wants Marty fired.
I too believe that something as got to give in San Diego, they have all the talent in the world over there, solid defense, arguably the best RB in the game, the absolute best TE in the game, a very capable set of WRs and very decent QB. After last years early exit from the playoffs and this years lack of a playoff seed, I think ole Marty is going soft. If nothing else they need a change, Marty used to be a hard-nosed coach and they didn't have it this year!!
Cheers!
If Tice can get to 9-6 with all the BS the team endured this year, why would a team capable of beating the Colts in Indy and finished 9-6 and out of the playoffs not consider a coaching change?

I am not gonna bag on him all that much for these comments ... he is paid to be an analyst and so he said what he thinks.
There is no question that Marty-ball cost them a game in Philadelphia and a game against Miami ... both that they should have won ... That would have put them into the playoffs more than likely ...
I still disagree and say you bring Marty back ... but I don't think this is all that outlandish.

The chargers would be 1st place in the NFC with a first round bye in the playoffs if they had the Schedule the vikings had.
Just look at how tough their schedule was before you go pointing fingers at them. I forget how many of their games were lost by under 7 and in OT or the last plays of the game.;-)

Went to a SB, and lost, and for arguments sake he didn't even lead his offense into the endzone.
He may have his opinions, just like I have mine, and that is that he should stfu.

You are absolutely right, however they lost the games that mattered!! At the end of the day they didn't get the job done, and that falls on the coach as it did Minnesota.
I never really put a whole lot of thought into this one, I guess as an outsider looking in it doesn't seem to be that outlandish as was mentioned by someone else already!!
But I do know that if I were a fan of the Chargers I would be pretty steamed that my team didn't make a run with all the talent that they have there!!
Cheers!!

They beat the Colts, that's their crowning achievement for this season.
