Re: 2006 NFL Draft revisited - was Greenway the steal of the draft?

The only guys on that poll that we were available was Holmes and Cromartie.

Of the guys that were left, these would have been interesting.

The original Cromartie of the NFL, rather have known about Hester at #57 or what ever it was in the second!
Draft#:19
Antonio Cromartie
Ht/Wt:6-2/207
Position:CB
Drafted From: Florida State

We wouldn't have drafted AD!
Draft#:27
DeAngelo Williams
Ht/Wt:5-9/213
Position:RB
Drafted From: Memphis

Would have had to get rid of Matt early, but we would have a solid center this season without question marks.
Draft#:29
Nick Mangold
Ht/Wt:6-4/299
Position:C
Drafted From: Ohio State

Once again, we wouldn't have drafted AD!
Draft#:30
Joseph Addai
Ht/Wt:5-11/215
Position:RB
Drafted From: Louisiana State

We wouldn't have went after JA.
Draft#:32
Mathias Kiwanuka
Ht/Wt:6-6/265
PositionE
Drafted From: Boston College

Greenway, Williams, and Cromartie are all studs of the draft.
I think Brandon Marshall is the biggest steal though, as he fell to the 4th round.

Ya, the steal was Marshall up to this point.

The poll and the title of the thread and article are contradicting to a central debate.
The title of the thread for the poll would be who would you have rather had in the first round or something like that.

Steals can't happen in the first round, JMHO!
Maybe towards the end, the last 1/4th.
Moss was almost a steal, borderline.

I think it also depends on how many picks were made at that position before a great player goes in the draft.
Ha ha, anyone WR after Troy W. was picked was a steal,
ie stolen.
JK, Matt Jones and Mike Williams didn't pan out very well.
If only we had Ware, or Merriman.
It was a bad year to "want" a WR.

I dont think anyone is suggesting that we should have drafted the guys in the poll instead of Greenway. We are just comparing his success to others drafted in the first round in his year.

NO

Its no secret I hated the pick and overall way this staff executed that draft.
Truth be told, I believe we could have got Cutler if Spielman was the man instead of Foley.
Lest we forget, the pick only cost the Bronco's the 15th and 68th choice.

We could have given up our 17th and 51rst, got Cutler, took Griff with our remaining 2nd, and even moved up to get Winston instead of using it on a QB cause we got one in the first round.

Draft would have looked like this if I was drafting.....

1 (11) Jay Cutler Mn Vikings
2 19(51) Cedric Griffin CB Texas
2 32(64) Eric Winston OT Miami (Florida)
4 30(127) Ray Edwards DE Purdue
5 16(149) Greg Blue S Georgia

Am I upset that Chad is on the team?
Hell, no, hindsight is 20/20 I guess, however, in the long run, BJ would have still let us down because he was just to old (sound familiar), Greenway would have still missed the year resulting in EJ, Napo, Ben and CO sucking up the LB duties etc etc.

Ultimately, we would have our franchise QB, he would have time in the system and would be around forever.
Now all we have to look forward to is........., well........I'd better stop there, this is a Chad thread isn't it.

Ohhhhhhhh how I long for a do-over on that one.

Marrdro,

I love you man, but no one wanted Cutler more than I did. No one was still on Vany campus during the draft, two minutes from the bookstore, ready to sprint to buy his VANDY jersey.

When Denver traded up and got him, I cried. Did I see T get drafted? No, I was chugging beer. Did I see Greenway get drafted? No, I was smoking hookah,

I'll never forget the day we didn't get Cutler. That said. Greenway was the best thing otherwise. Our LB hole would be just as big as our QB hole if we did not settle ourselves, and draft smartly. Greenway was BPA. Bottomline. Especially when given the circumstances.

Ahhh my friend, you know I was chugging beers and monitoring 2 TV's and multiple chat rooms on my computers in my war room.
;D

Long story short, the Vikes were in the mix to move up and get him (or atleast someone at that spot).
Problem for us was Foley screwed the pooch by not giving up a extra pick to get Cutler, gaffed on Clemens as well by not realizing, like any draftnick who was following the workouts of players by teams, that both Jets and Vikes worked him out several times, just like they did Cutler and were targeting him with thier second pick (right between the vikes 2 picks).

In the end we wound up with a damn fine LB who, as you said, was the BPA at 17 but in no way can he be considered the steal of the draft.

Throw in the loud TV's and she finally gives up and leaves for the day.
