18 Game NFL Season Looks Likely to Happen

NFL, union meet to discuss 18-game season, other issues

League owners and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell want to expand the regular season from 16 games to 18 and cut the preseason from four games to two. Colts president Bill Polian said Monday that he believes such a switch is a "fait accompli," although the union hasn't said it wants to make a change.

I'm kind of of 50/50 with this, the one good thing the pre season does is give a chance for the lesser players to step up and show what they can do. With the European league gone and reducing pre-season to 2 games where are these guys going to get that chance? The chance of players getting injured or burning out at the end of the season is a concern too. On the other hand two more competitive games a year would certainly be a good thing for the fans. I'm also wondering if further down the line Goodell wants to expand the international games played, more fans worldwide = more money for the league and owners.

    I'm all for it.
I would think this would get lumped in with the rest of the collective bargaining which I'm sure won't get decided until the stroke of midnight on the final day.

I'm 50/50 on it as well

A plus side is a team that starts of slow still has a better shot at making the playoffs then

A bad thing about it is the rooks and young guys trying to make the squad have less of a chance now.. Gotta do it all through training camp and mini camp, which isn't game action

I am also of mixed feelings about it. There are lots of pro and cons to consider.

On the positive side, as a fan, it means more football for me to watch. Yay! Also, given the reduced preseason, it means that TC can't be so soft any more. Childress, among others, will be forced to work his guys harder in order to see what they've really got, and to get them in shape quicker. In general, I see this as a good thing.

On the minus side, unfortunately, this means more opportunity for serious injuries, both in camp and in the extended season. I expect the veterans will be solidly against it, but the younger guys fighting for their shots may be a bit happier since they'll probably be playing the large majority of the two remaining preseason games.

I do expect the league to push for more foreign soil games, as Scottish mentioned. Why pass up a financial opportunity like that? More and more countries are starting to get interested in "Gridiron" football, so the crop is there to be harvested.

I am completely for an 18 game season ... the only thing I have against it is the hallowed 16-game marks that will surely be shattered in time with 18 game seasons.

I personally LOVE giving teams more time to recover from down months. I hate watching a team lose 3 of 4 and basically be out of it without winning out.

I also think it is time to expand the playoffs ... But that is a long way from happening I think.

So will the season start 2 games earlier, essentially replacing the preseason games, or will 2 more games be added on to the end of the season?

It will start two weeks earlier.

I think the original thought was that it was going to be conference games, but not sure on this one. It would make sense to play conference games to sort out more tie-breakers.

Problem is, that's 3 teams, so which one do you leave out?

You know - El V - that is a great question. Of all the discussion of the 18-game schedule, I've yet to read anything about who those 2 opponents should be. Right now, they've got the 16-game schedule pretty damn well mapped out.

6 games vs. the division are a given.
4 games vs. a rotating other conference division are a given.

My best guess would be that they would throw out the current rotating conference division + 3 games vs. other conference division "same-finish" opponents and go with a rotating schedule through the other 2 divisions.

    Example (using the Vikings):
2012 - NFC North (6 games), AFC South (same as 2008, swapping home and away games so TN & JAX/LA here, @IND and @HOU - 4 games), then something like NFC South and NFC West - 8 games.

2013 - NFC North (6 games), AFC North (PIT & CLE here, CIN & BAL away - 4 games), NFC West & NFC East - 8 games.

2014 - NFC North (6 games), AFC East (NE & NYJ here, MIA and BUF away - 4 games), NFC East & NFC South - 8 games.

2015 - NFC North (6 games), AFC West (SD & OAK here, KC & DEN away - 4 games), NFC South & NFC West - 8 games.

    And so on.

That seems to be the most balanced way to handle it. The NFL likes to have things known wayyyy in advance.

    =Z=

Thanks to Josdin for the awesome sig!

As SV says more games equals more $$ for owners and ultimately players. I also think Goodell is looking at this based on fan feedback on preseason games. Many fans all over, including some on this board, have complained about paying near full price for a 'meaningless' preseason game. Well now you'll potentially get more bang for your season ticket buck.

As for when then I suspect that it's more lightly of games being added onto the beginning of the season rather than the end to allow for better weather for games - which means more chance of a better fan turn out in colder parts of the country.

I can see the NFL pushing the international appeal with games outside the US but, and I say this an overseas fan, the SB should stay in the US and not be played outside. If the league want to push a big game outside the US then shift the Pro-Bowl but leave the SB where it should be played.
Time spent annoying a Packer fan is never time wasted...
