14 skip practice, but Favre attends

Green Bay - It isn't often that a Brett Favre sighting takes a back seat to anything in Green Bay, but that was the situation Wednesday.

Despite the fact the Packers' future Hall of Fame quarterback was front and center at the first of 14 voluntary practices scheduled by the team over the course of the next four weeks, the focus wound up being on those who didn't show up.

There were 14 key contributors unaccounted for in all, including eight expected starters in cornerbacks Al Harris and Charles Woodson, running back Ahman Green, safety Nick Collins, linebacker A.J. Hawk, defensive tackle Ryan Pickett, wide receiver Donald Driver and tight end Bubba Franks.

Some, such as Hawk, Green Bay's No. 1 pick who is in the midst of finishing up classes at Ohio State, weren't expected to be in attendance from the outset.

    Others undoubtedly were.

And although coach Mike McCarthy wouldn't get into specifics regarding each absent player's excuse, he likely was counting on a better turnout as he continues the process of familiarizing himself with his players and vice versa.

"The veterans that have missed, a lot of them have personal situations. We've had a number of things come up," McCarthy said. "A lot of it, too, is scheduling. Any time you have a new coach put in a totally different program, you're going to have scheduling issues. The thing that I've talked (about) a number of times to the football team . . . is communication.

"We need to do a better job of communicating to one another, and I think they're doing a better job of that. But as we move forward and instill our off-season program, obviously I'm looking for better participation. The goal is 100 percent."

According to McCarthy, Wednesday's practice was devoted to reviewing material covered in the first two minicamps; today's and Friday's will be also. With that in mind, veterans probably weren't missing all that much.

Next week , though, McCarthy will begin installing more of his system and that's when attendance - even for experienced players - becomes more of an issue.

To that end, more players are expected to arrive in the coming days as their schedules begin to sort themselves out. Woodson, who is traveling abroad, and safety Mark Roman were among those mentioned by McCarthy.

Some veterans already in attendance, on the other hand, felt it incumbent upon themselves to help set a tone for their younger teammates and the upcoming season.

"It is totally voluntary," said defensive end Aaron Kampman, who signed a four-year, $21 million contract in the off-season but has made all the voluntary team workouts thus far.

"But the fact is we were a 4-12 team last year, so it becomes even more important for us to try to work toward making sure that doesn't happen again. So obviously we want as many guys here as we can (get)."

The position hit hardest by absenteeism on Wednesday was the defensive backfield.

Eight non-injured players in all were missing including the Packers' top three corners in Harris, Woodson and Ahmad Carroll as well as two of the top three safeties in Collins and Roman.

Harris' absence was notable in that he's rumored to be disenchanted with his contract and is trying to send a message to the Packers.

Harris missed Green Bay's last voluntary minicamp as well, but agent Jack Bechta said it was due to a personal issue regarding his parents and not because of his contract.

McCarthy, when asked about it at that time, said he expected Harris to be on hand for the current round of practices.

Harris, who is in the midst of a five-year, $18.635 million contract he signed in September 2004, couldn't be reached for comment on Wednesday and Bechta was out of his office and didn't return a phone message.

McCarthy, meanwhile, said Harris hasn't contacted him.

"I haven't heard from Al," he said. "But once again, they are voluntary sessions. Al has always performed for us in the past."

McCarthy added he doesn't anticipate problems with Harris, either.

"Once again, we're in the process of changing a culture as far as how off-seasons have gone here in the past," he said. "We've asked, probably on a 2-to-1 ratio the amount of work that's been done in the past from our players and we're working through that."

Meanwhile, the lone projected starter in the defensive backfield on hand Wednesday - safety Marquand Manuel - chose to take an optimistic view of the situation, even though the No. 1 defense has yet to line up as a complete unit.

"The guys that are here have a chance to get reps. That's how you've got to look at it," he said. "A lot of people want to look at the negative side of it all the time but it's a chance for guys to be able to trust the young guys.

"I was a young guy. It took somebody not coming to minicamp or training camp, holding out for me to get my opportunity to show the coaches that I could play. You've got to look at the positive side of it."

 So with the 14 players not attending mini camp plus all the others that are there, but not participating, exactly what the hell are they doing?

Of course Favre's limited by the team.

There's only a limited amount of team at the mini camp or practicing.

They are taking the example that the coaches set when they let Favre miss their minicamp that it is not important for the veterans to be there!

Like Favre they can miss the camps and workouts because it does not effect their play, or the team! Like last year when Favre did not participate in their off season program and worked out on his own with a personal trainer, didn't Favre have a great year last year (he did if you were an opposing cornerback)!

When players are given special treatment (like under Tice) the other players notice, they may not say things in public but they don't like it!

Sounds to me like the word "TEAM" shouldn't even be used in the Packers case....

Looks like their acting like anything else but a TEAM

haha, this quote cracks me up! lets not think of it like we're gunna suck next year or our secondary is absent completely, but instead, lets think about that early draft pick we're going to get. well, as long as their 4th string corners are gettin' their reps and showing they can play, the pack are going to be in for a "fun" ride this season.

and a.j. hawk not showing up? he's a rookie, i dont care how good he is. he should be at those camps, no matter how miniscule because he just flat out doesnt know what to expect, and missing practice will only make things worse. to quote allen iverson, "come on, we're talkin bout practice!"

Where are the GB fans to defend Favre's honor? Is it because you know that that he is the problem finally?
